Mission Statement

Three children of various ages walking in a grassy field.

Seated on an acre of land on Austin's eastern edge, The Homegrown School is intended to provide a homestead-based educational environment for the youth of Austin and its surrounding communities.

Our goal is to introduce agriculture to our students and emphasize a connection to the earth while temporarily disconnecting from technology. By running our "farm school" with sustainable practices, we also seek to instill future generations with the ability to protect and conserve our natural resources.

We believe that community growth starts with self and the responsibilities to our homes and our own bodies; therefore, our farm-to-table approach will provide children with the opportunity to understand the bounty their hard work has to offer while nurturing them from the inside out.

By using their hands for good – nurturing animals, investing time in a harvest, learning to prepare meals to share and more - our students will develop a sense of purpose and adopt skills which can last them a lifetime.

Our Story

The Spring of 2020 taught us all that life as we knew it could change dramatically. The start of quarantine brought so much loss to many of us and, while we grieved the pieces of what "life" once was, we came to embrace the change and growth that's possible when we're stripped of the comfort of routine. It took a pandemic to slow us down but it brought into focus the things that truly matter: our families and community, our physical health, our emotional well-being and our connection with the earth.

The Homegrown School was an idea born from a desire to instill these same values in the future generation- those most greatly impacted by the up-ending of routine and the only life they'd known. What a perfect opportunity to introduce a new way to live: remembering that food, a love of learning, a love of self and compassion for all living things can be grown at a home away from home.
